JEE Exam Details 2027, Registration, Pattern & Syllabus

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is conducted in two stages: JEE Main, administered by the National Testing Agency (NTA), and JEE Advanced, administered by a rotating organising IIT for candidates who qualify in JEE Main. The JEE Mains cutoff determines eligibility for JEE Advanced and plays an important role in admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Together, these exams govern admission to India’s IITs, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and IISc Bengaluru. This guide consolidates every essential detail for the 2027 admission cycle, including the exam calendar, registration process, eligibility criteria, exam pattern, marking scheme, and syllabus for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

JEE Exam Details 2027

The table below summarises the core structural differences between JEE Main and JEE Advanced at a glance. JEE Main is the first stage and the larger exam by candidate volume; JEE Advanced is the second stage, accessible only to a limited pool of top JEE Main qualifiers.

Before diving into the details, it helps to start practising in the actual exam format. Cracku's JEE Questions covers topic-wise and previous-year questions for both JEE Main and JEE Advanced, so you build familiarity with the pattern early.

JEE Exam 2027

JEE 2027 follows the same two-stage structure as previous cycles. JEE Main 2027 will be conducted in two sessions, January and April 2027, by NTA. Candidates who qualify within the top 2,50,000 (category-wise) become eligible for JEE Advanced 2027, conducted by the organising IIT typically in late May 2027. Official dates for both exams are expected to be confirmed through their respective notifications closer to the cycle; the NTA notification for JEE Main 2027 Session 1 is expected in October to November 2026.

Why two stages exist: JEE Main serves as a broad-based filter, testing a large pool of candidates against NCERT-aligned, rationalised syllabus content. JEE Advanced then tests a much smaller, pre-qualified pool against a deeper, more demanding syllabus, including topics that have been removed from JEE Main but retained for IIT aspirants specifically.

JEE Exam Calendar

The table below presents the expected JEE 2027 calendar, covering both stages from registration through to JoSAA counselling. All dates are based on the consistent pattern followed in the 2025 and 2026 cycles and will be confirmed only upon official notification release.

JEE Registration Process

Registration for JEE Main and JEE Advanced is conducted entirely online, through separate portals with separate logins, fees, and document requirements. JEE Main registration happens first; JEE Advanced registration becomes available only after a candidate qualifies JEE Main and receives a rank within the eligible pool. The table below outlines the JEE Main registration process step by step; JEE Advanced registration follows a similar online flow using the JEE Main roll number and a valid JEE Main rank.

Step

Action

1

Visit jeemain.nta.ac.in and click the active registration link for the relevant session

2

Complete new candidate registration with name, date of birth, valid email ID, and mobile number to generate an Application Number

3

Log in and fill personal details, academic details (entered as text, not uploaded as certificates), paper preference, and exam city choices

4

Upload photograph (JPEG, 10 to 200 KB) and signature (JPEG, 4 to 30 KB); upload category or PwD certificate only if applicable

5

Pay the application fee via Credit Card, Debit Card, Net Banking, or UPI

6

Preview, submit, and download the confirmation page for your records

7

Use the brief correction window (2 to 3 days after registration closes) to fix exam city, paper choice, or personal detail errors if needed

Academic details such as Class 10 and Class 12 information are entered as text data (roll number, board, year, marks) rather than uploaded as certificate files. Only the photograph, signature, and category or PwD certificates (where applicable) are uploaded during registration.

A third portal for counselling: Registering for and qualifying JEE Main or JEE Advanced does not automatically enrol a candidate in seat counselling. Admission to NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and IITs is processed through a completely separate portal, josaa.nic.in, operated by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA). Candidates must register again on josaa.nic.in after their JEE Main or JEE Advanced result, using their respective application or roll number, to participate in seat allotment.

Important note on attempts: In November 2024, the Joint Admission Board (JAB) briefly announced an increase to 3 attempts in 3 consecutive years for JEE Advanced 2025, only to roll this back to the standard 2 attempts in 2 consecutive years within about 13 days. The matter reached the Supreme Court, which allowed a narrow, one-time exception only for students who had already dropped out of their courses during that brief window. For every cycle since, including the expected framework for JEE Advanced 2027, the limit remains 2 attempts in 2 consecutive years. Aspirants should disregard any recurring rumours of a 3-attempt policy unless confirmed directly on jeeadv.ac.in.

JEE Eligibility Criteria

Eligibility for JEE Main and JEE Advanced differs in several important respects, even though JEE Advanced eligibility is built directly on top of JEE Main eligibility. The table below compares the two exams across every major eligibility parameter.

Criterion

JEE Main 2027

JEE Advanced 2027

Age Limit

None

Birth-year criterion applies (see Advanced Exam Details above)

Qualifying Exam

Class 12 (or equivalent) with Physics and Mathematics compulsory, plus one of Chemistry/Biology/Biotechnology/Technical Vocational

Same as JEE Main, plus a valid JEE Main 2027 rank

Year of Passing

Passed in 2025 or 2026, or appearing in 2027 (3-year window)

Passed Class 12 for the first time in 2026 or 2027

Minimum Marks to Appear

None

None beyond JEE Main qualification

Minimum Marks for Admission (JoSAA)

75% aggregate across 5 subjects, or top 20 percentile (65% or top 20 percentile for SC/ST/PwD)

Same JoSAA admission criterion applies

Previous IIT Admission

Not restricted

Candidates previously admitted to an IIT are not eligible to reattempt

A common point of confusion: The 75% aggregate marks requirement is an admission condition checked by JoSAA at the counselling stage, not a requirement to appear for either JEE Main or JEE Advanced. A candidate can sit for and qualify both exams with lower Class 12 marks, but will not be eligible for admission to an NIT, IIIT, GFTI, or IIT without meeting this threshold.

JEE Exam Pattern

JEE Main and JEE Advanced differ meaningfully in question format, marking scheme, and tie-breaking rules, even though both test the same three core subjects. The table below highlights the key pattern differences between the two exams.

Aspect

JEE Main Paper 1

JEE Advanced

Sections

Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics

Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics across 2 papers

Marking (MCQ)

+4 correct, -1 incorrect

+3 or +4 correct (varies by question type), negative marking applies to most sections

Marking (Numerical Value Questions)

+4 correct, -1 incorrect, all compulsory

Varies by section; some carry no negative marking, others do

Tie-Breaking

8-step hierarchy based on subject percentiles and accuracy ratios; both age and application number fully discarded; unresolved ties get the same AIR

Resolved using subject-wise marks in Mathematics, then Chemistry, then Physics, as per JAB rules

On JEE Main tie-breaking specifically: When candidates tie on overall percentile, JEE Main resolves ties through an 8-step hierarchy based on subject-wise scores and accuracy ratios. Both age and application number have been completely discarded as tie-breaking criteria; candidates who remain tied after all 8 steps are assigned the exact same All India Rank.
