JEE Mains Eligibility Criteria 2027, Qualification Criteria, Attempts

JEE Main 2027 eligibility is determined by the National Testing Agency (NTA) based on academic qualification, year of passing Class 12, and subject requirements. Unlike JEE Advanced, JEE Main has no age limit and no minimum marks requirement to appear for the exam itself. The key eligibility factors are the year a candidate first appeared in Class 12 boards, the subjects studied, and the number of attempts already used. This guide covers every eligibility parameter for JEE Main 2027 in detail, including age limit, qualification criteria, educational requirements, attempt limits, and rules specific to Class 12 appearing candidates.

JEE Mains Eligibility Criteria 2027

The table below summarises every eligibility parameter for JEE Main 2027 at a glance. These criteria are expected to follow the established NTA framework from JEE Main 2025 and 2026; final confirmation will come with the official notification expected in October to November 2026.

JEE Mains Age Limit

JEE Main has no minimum or maximum age limit. Any candidate who meets the academic qualification criteria can appear for the exam, regardless of age. This is a deliberate policy: the NTA removed the age cap from JEE Main in 2017, and it has remained unchanged since. The actual restriction on eligibility comes from the year-of-passing window, not from date of birth. This is different from JEE Advanced, which does enforce a specific birth-year criterion for candidates seeking IIT admission. The table below clarifies the distinction.

Aspect

JEE Main Rule

JEE Advanced Rule (for IIT admission)

Minimum age

No minimum age

No minimum age beyond the birth-year criterion

Maximum age

No maximum age

Must be born on or after October 1, 2002 (General/OBC-NCL/EWS) for JEE Advanced 2027

Relaxation for reserved categories

Not applicable (no age cap exists)

SC/ST/PwD candidates get a 5-year relaxation: born on or after October 1, 1997

What actually restricts eligibility

The year-of-passing window (3 consecutive years from first Class 12 attempt), not date of birth

Both the JEE Main year-of-passing window and the separate birth-year criterion apply

Why this distinction matters: A candidate can be of any age and still qualify for JEE Main, but if they intend to attempt JEE Advanced for IIT admission, they must additionally satisfy the birth-year criterion. A 26-year-old who meets the JEE Main year-of-passing window could appear for JEE Main but would not be eligible for JEE Advanced 2027 under the General category birth-year rule.

JEE Mains Qualification Criteria

Qualification for JEE Main 2027 is based entirely on when a candidate first appeared in their Class 12 board examination, not on the marks scored. The eligibility window spans 3 consecutive years from the year of first appearance. The table below illustrates how this applies across common candidate scenarios, including diploma holders and candidates with prior IIT admission history.

Scenario

Eligible for JEE Main 2027?

Explanation

Passed Class 12 in 2025

Yes

Falls within the 3-year window (2025, 2026, 2027)

Passed Class 12 in 2026

Yes

Falls within the 3-year window

Appearing in Class 12 board exams in 2027

Yes

First-time appearance in the exam year itself is always eligible

Passed Class 12 in 2024 or earlier

No

Falls outside the 3-year window; not eligible for JEE Main 2027

Completed Class 12 equivalent through NIOS or state open school

Yes

Treated on par with regular board candidates provided the subject and marks criteria are met

Diploma holder (3-year AICTE-approved)

Yes

Diploma holders are eligible for JEE Main and JEE Advanced for 1st-year UG admission, though they do not get lateral entry through JoSAA

Already admitted to an IIT previously

Yes, for JEE Main only

Barred from reattempting JEE Advanced, but remains eligible for JEE Main to access NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs

Open school and equivalence cases: Candidates from NIOS or recognised state open schools are treated identically to regular board candidates, provided they meet the subject and year-of-passing requirements. International board candidates must obtain an equivalence certificate from the Association of Indian Universities before applying, since NTA verifies board recognition during registration.

JEE Mains Educational Qualification

The educational qualification requirement for JEE Main 2027 centres on the subjects studied in Class 12, not just the qualifying board itself. Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics are compulsory for Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) eligibility. The complete subject and board requirements are detailed in the table below.

Requirement

Detail

Compulsory subjects in Class 12

Physics and Mathematics are compulsory for Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech); they must be paired with any one of Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, or a Technical Vocational subject

Total subjects required

5 subjects in aggregate: Physics, Mathematics, any one elective (Chemistry/Biotechnology/Biology/Technical Vocational), one Language, and one additional elective subject.

Recognised boards

CBSE, ICSE, all state boards, NIOS, and any board recognised by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU)

International and foreign boards

Accepted, subject to equivalence certification from AIU; candidates should verify equivalence well before applying

B.Arch (Paper 2A) additional requirement

Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics are all strictly compulsory in Class 12 for B.Arch eligibility

B.Planning (Paper 2B) additional requirement

Mathematics is compulsory in Class 12, in addition to the standard qualifying criteria

Vocational or open-school candidates

Eligible provided Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics were studied as part of the qualifying examination

Important note for B.Arch and B.Planning aspirants: While Paper 2B (B.Planning) only requires Mathematics as a mandatory core subject, Paper 2A (B.Arch) strictly requires Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as mandatory qualifying subjects in Class 12.

How Many Attempts Are Allowed for JEE Mains?

JEE Main allows a maximum of 6 attempts across a candidate's eligibility window: 2 sessions per year (January and April) for 3 consecutive years. This is distinct from JEE Advanced, which permits only 2 attempts across 2 consecutive years. Each session counts as a separate attempt, regardless of whether the candidate completes the full paper or scores well. The table below compares the attempt structure for both exams.

Exam

Sessions Per Year

Years of Eligibility

Maximum Total Attempts

JEE Main

2 (January and April)

3 consecutive years from first Class 12 attempt

6

JEE Advanced

1 attempt per year (single exam, two compulsory papers)

2 consecutive years

2

Key clarification on attempt counting: Appearing in a session, even partially, counts as one used attempt. The 3-year window for JEE Main is calculated from the year a candidate first appears in Class 12 boards, not from the year they first take JEE Main. A candidate who first appeared in Class 12 boards in 2025 can attempt JEE Main in 2025, 2026, and 2027, using up to 2 sessions in each of those years.

Can Class 12 Appearing Students Apply for JEE Mains 2027?

Yes, students currently appearing in their Class 12 board examinations in 2027 are fully eligible to apply for and sit for JEE Main 2027. This is one of the most common eligibility questions among first-time applicants, since the JEE Main exam (January and April 2027) typically precedes or overlaps with most state and central board examination schedules. The table below addresses the most frequent questions Class 12 appearing candidates have about their eligibility.

Question

Answer

Can a student currently in Class 12 (appearing in 2027 boards) apply for JEE Main 2027?

Yes. Candidates appearing in their Class 12 board examination in 2027 are fully eligible to apply for and appear in JEE Main 2027.

Is a Class 12 result required at the time of JEE Main registration?

No. Registration is based on self-declared academic details; the Class 12 result is not required to register or sit for the exam.

What happens if a Class 12 appearing candidate does not pass the board exam?

They will not be eligible for admission to NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, or IITs even if they score well in JEE Main or JEE Advanced, since passing Class 12 is a mandatory admission condition.

Can a Class 12 appearing candidate use both JEE Main sessions?

Yes. Both Session 1 (January 2027) and Session 2 (April 2027) are open to Class 12 appearing candidates; the better of the two scores is considered.

Does the 75% marks rule apply at the time of JEE Main registration?

No. The 75% aggregate rule (65% for SC/ST/PwD) is checked only at the time of JoSAA admission counselling, not at JEE Main registration.

Class 12 appearing candidates should register using their school-provided roll number and academic details as text entries; no certificates or mark sheets are uploaded during JEE Main registration. Final admission to any institute through JoSAA remains conditional on successfully passing the Class 12 board examination and meeting the applicable aggregate marks criterion.

JEE Mains Eligibility Criteria 2027: Conclusion

JEE Main 2027 eligibility is simple to understand once students check the main rules clearly. There is no age limit and no minimum Class 12 marks requirement to appear for the exam. Students who passed Class 12 in 2025 or 2026, or are appearing in 2027, are expected to fall within the eligibility window. However, they must have the required subjects in Class 12, especially Physics and Mathematics for B.E./B.Tech admission.

Students should also remember that the 75% marks rule is not needed for JEE Main registration, but it becomes important during JoSAA admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Since JEE Main allows multiple attempts across 3 consecutive years, candidates should use both sessions wisely and plan their preparation early. Always check the official notification once released before applying.
