The CAT exam is a computer-based test with three sections: Verbal Ability, Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Ability. In the past, the exam lasted for about three hours. However, due to the pandemic, it has been shortened to a two-hour test.
Most of the questions are Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs), while the remaining questions require typing in the answer (TITA). Negative marks are given for incorrect answers in MCQs, but there are no negative marks for TITA questions.

Important Things to Consider:
The VARC section in the CAT exam tests primarily the reading, comprehension and language skills. This section has 24 questions which are divided into 2 sections: Reading Comprehension and Verbal Ability. You must work on your language skills to crack this section in the CAT exam.

Reading Comprehension is the dominant in the VARC section. As per the last few years' trends, you get to see 4 RCs in various genres. Generally, RCs are of 450-550 words with 4-6 paragraphs. There are no specific grammar-based questions. But you should have good knowledge of grammar to comprehend better.

Verbal Ability comprises 4 major sets i.e. Para Jumbles, Para Summary, Odd One Out and Sentence Completion/Placement. These sets usually test the coherent usage of the English language and its correct & appropriate usage. Here, it requires your grammatical, sentence structure, and paraphrasing skills.

DILR is an important section. It has 4 sets of 5 questions each. Overall, the section has 20 questions. Usually, this section has been moderate and demands strong problem-solving skills. It is ideal if you can solve at least 2 sets out of the 4. This section is future divided into two parts: Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning.
Data Interpretation sets test how good you are with numbers and data. This section has numerical sets and requires strong calculation. You can check the major topics of this section below:

This is one of the most extensive sections to prepare for the CAT exam. This section has vast concepts. As of last year, there were a total of 22 questions in this section.
