Question 84

Find the value of p if 3x + p, x - 10 and -x + 16 are in arithmetic progression.

Solution

Terms in arithmetic progression : $$(3x + p) , (x - 10) , (-x + 16)$$

=> Difference between first two terms is equal to the difference between last two terms

=> $$(x - 10) - (3x + p) = (-x + 16) - (x - 10)$$

=> $$-2x -10 - p = -2x + 16 + 10$$

=> $$-p = 26 + 10 = 36$$

=> $$p = -36$$

=> Ans - (D)
