Question 70

Given below are two statements:
Statement I: Sodium dichromate and potassium dichromate are classified as primary standards in titrimetric analysis.
Statement II: Phenolphthalein is a weak base, therefore it dissociates in acidic medium.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below

Statement I: Sodium dichromate and potassium dichromate are classified as primary standards in titrimetric analysis.

Incorrect, Only Potassium dichromate is classified as primary standards in titrimetric analysis as it is more stable and pure. Unlike, Sodium dichromate, it is highly hygroscopic (readily absorbs moisture from the air) which prevents Sodium dichromate from maintaining its original mass and purity.

Statement II: Phenolphthalein is a weak base, therefore it dissociates in acidic medium.

Incorrect, Phenolphthalein is a weak acid, not a weak base. It is largely unionized in acidic medium and gets ionized in basic medium (by showing pink colour).
