What is the equation of the line passing through the point (-1,3) and having x-intercept of 4 units?

Solution

Equation of line passing thorough points $$(x_1 , y_1)$$ and $$(x_2 , y_2)$$ = $$(y - y_1) = \frac{(y_2 - y_1)}{(x_2 - x_1)} (x - x_1)$$

x-intercept of 4 units implies that the line passes through (4,0)

Points given = (-1,3) and (4,0)

=> Equation of line = $$(y - 3) = \frac{(0 - 3)}{(4 + 1)} (x + 1)$$

=> $$(y - 3) = \frac{-3}{5} (x + 1)$$

=> $$5y - 15 = -3x - 3$$

=> $$3x + 5y = 12$$

=> Ans - (B)
