Question 62

The slope of the line passing through the points (-5,1) and (x,-4) is -5/8. Find x.

Solution

Slope of line passing through $$(x_1,y_1)$$ and $$(x_2,y_2)$$ is $$\frac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1}$$

=> Slope of the line passing through the points (-5,1) and (x,-4)

= $$\frac{-4 - 1}{x + 5} = \frac{-5}{8}$$

=> $$\frac{-5}{x + 5} = \frac{-5}{8}$$

=> $$x + 5 = 8$$

=> $$x = 8 - 5 = 3$$

=> Ans - (B)
