Therefore every typical carbohydrate necessarily contains:
• a carbonyl group, written generically as $$\gt C = O$$ (it may appear as $$-CHO$$ in aldoses or $$>C = O$$ in ketoses), and
• multiple hydroxyl ($$-OH$$) groups.
