Question 60

If 4x - 5y = -37 and 7x + y = -16, then x - y =

Equation 1 : $$4x - 5y = -37$$

Equation 2 : $$7x + y = -16$$

Multiplying equation (2) by 5, we get : $$35x + 5y = -80$$

Adding above equation to equation (1)

=> $$(4x + 35x) + (-5y + 5y) = -37 - 80$$

=> $$39x = -117$$

=> $$x = \frac{-117}{39} = -3$$

Substituting value of $$x$$ in equation (2)

=> $$y = -16 - 7(-3) = 21 - 16 = 5$$

$$\therefore$$ $$(x - y) = -3 - 5 = -8$$

=> Ans - (A)
