a and b are two numbers such that their mean proportion is 6 and third proportion is 48. What is the value of a and b?
Given,
Mean proportion = $$\sqrt{\ ab}=6$$
So, ab = 36 .............(i)
Third proportion of a and b = $$\frac{b^2}{a}$$ = 48
So, $$a=\frac{b^2}{48}$$
Putting of value of a in (i)
we get,
$$\frac{b^2}{48}\times\ b=36$$
$$b^3=36\times\ 48$$
$$\therefore\ b=12$$
$$\therefore\ a=3$$
Hence, Option B is correct.
