The speed of a boat going downstream is 22 km/h. The speed of the stream is 1 km/h. How much distance in total will the boat cover going 3 hours downstream and 2 hours upstream?
Let's assume the speed of boat in still water and speed of the stream are 'B' and 'C' respectively.
The speed of a boat going downstream is 22 km/h.
B+C = 22Â Â Eq.(i)
The speed of the stream is 1 km/h.
C = 1Â Â Â Eq.(ii)
Put Eq.(ii) in Eq.(i).
B+1 = 22
B = 22-1
B = 21
distance covered by the boat while going 3 hours downstream = $$3\times(B+C)$$
=Â $$3\times22$$
= 66 km
distance covered by the boat while going 2 hours upstream = $$2\times(B-C)$$
= $$2\times(21-1)$$
= $$2\times20$$
= 40 km
Total distance covered by the boat in both streams = 66+40
= 106 km
