Question 58

If $$a^2 = 2$$, then $$(a + 1)$$ is equal to

Solution

Given  $$a^2\ =\ 2$$

Hence $$a+1=\left(a+1\right)\times\ \ \frac{\ \left(a-1\right)}{\left(a-1\right)}$$

                         $$=\ \frac{\ a^2-1}{a-1}$$

                         $$=\ \frac{\ 2-1}{a-1}$$

                        $$=\ \frac{\ 1}{a-1}\times\ \ \frac{\ a-1}{a-1}$$

                        $$=\ \frac{\ a-1}{a^2+1-2a}$$

                        $$=\ \frac{\ a-1}{2+1-2a}$$

                        $$=\ \frac{\ a-1}{3-2a}$$
