Question 55

The average of a set of ten numbers is 40. If a number is removed from the set, then the average of the remaining numbers becomes 38. What was the number that was removed?

Solution

The average of a set of ten numbers is 40.

Sum of a set of ten numbers = $$40\times10$$ = 400    Eq.(i)

If a number is removed from the set, then the average of the remaining numbers becomes 38.

New Average after a number is removed from the set = $$38\times9$$ = 342    Eq.(ii)

The number that was removed =  Eq.(i)- Eq.(ii)

= 400-342

= 58
