Question 47

Differentiate the following. Complex salt and Simple salt

Correct Answer: 0

Solution

PLACEHOLDER ANSWER - the answer is a comparison. A simple salt is formed by neutralisation of an acid and a base and ionises completely into its simple ions, for example $$\text{NaCl} \rightarrow \text{Na}^+ + \text{Cl}^-$$. A complex salt contains a complex ion that keeps its identity in solution, so it does not give the tests of its individual constituent ions. For example $$\text{K}_4[\text{Fe(CN)}_6]$$ gives $$\text{K}^+$$ and $$[\text{Fe(CN)}_6]^{4-}$$, not $$\text{Fe}^{2+}$$ and $$\text{CN}^-$$.
