Question 46

Differentiate the following. Mixed salt and Double salt

Correct Answer: 0

Solution

PLACEHOLDER ANSWER - the answer is a comparison. A mixed salt is a single compound containing more than one kind of acid radical or of basic radical, for example bleaching powder $$\text{Ca(OCl)Cl}$$ or sodium potassium sulphate $$\text{NaKSO}_4$$. A double salt is formed when two simple salts crystallise together in a fixed ratio, for example potash alum $$\text{K}_2\text{SO}_4 \cdot \text{Al}_2(\text{SO}_4)_3 \cdot 24\text{H}_2\text{O}$$ or Mohr's salt. A double salt exists only in the solid state and in solution gives all the ions of its constituent simple salts.
