A wholesaler sold a water purifier at a loss of 40%. If the selling price has been increased by Its. 125, then wholesaler will get the profit of 10%. What was the cost price of the purifier?
Let the cost price (C.P.) of the purifier be Rs. x.
Selling price (S.P.) of the purifier = x - (40% of x) = 0.6x ( S.P. = C.P. - Loss)
If S.P. is increased by Rs. 125
Profit = 10% of x = 0.1x
S.P. of the purifier = x + 0.1x = 1.1x ( S.P. = C.P. + Profit)
⇒ 0.6x + 125 = 1.1x
⇒ 0.5x = 125
⇒ x = 125/0.5 = Rs. 250
∴ C.P. of the purifier = Rs. 250
