Question 37

Steam at $$100^\circ\text{C}$$ is passed in to a calorimeter of water equivalent $$10\text{ g}$$ containing $$290\text{ g}$$ of water at $$30^\circ\text{C}$$ till the temperature of water raises to $$40^\circ\text{C}$$. The mass of steam condensed is (Latent heat of steam is $$540\text{ cal/g}$$)

Solution

Heat gained by the water and calorimeter $$= (290 + 10) \times 1 \times (40 - 30) = 3000\text{ cal}$$. Each gram of steam gives $$540 + 1 \times (100 - 40) = 600\text{ cal}$$ on condensing and cooling to $$40^\circ\text{C}$$. So the mass of steam condensed is $$\frac{3000}{600} = 5\text{ g}$$.
