Average energy required by an adult to sustain himself is 1500 kilocalories per day. A medium sized banana is about 100 g and provides about 100 kilocalories. How many kg of bananas are required per day to sustain a population of 1000 million? If some how the biological processes were to be sustained by nuclear reactions, how many kg of mass must disappear to provide this energy?
Correct Answer: 0
PLACEHOLDER ANSWER - the question has two answers. Each person needs 15 bananas, i.e. 1.5 kg a day, so $$10^9$$ people need $$1.5 \times 10^9\text{ kg}$$ of bananas a day. The energy is $$1500 \times 10^3 \times 4.2 \times 10^9 = 6.3 \times 10^{15}\text{ J}$$ (taking 1 cal = 4.2 J). The mass that must disappear is $$\frac{6.3 \times 10^{15}}{9 \times 10^{16}} = 0.07\text{ kg}$$.
