A man is standing to the south of a vertical conductor carrying current facing the conductor. Direction of the magnetic field at a position in between him and the wire is from his left to right. What would be magnetic field direction behind him if he moved to a position (i) east of the conductor (ii) to the north of the conductor. Assume he always faces the conductor and current direction in the wire remains constant. (Express these directions as east or west etc.)
Correct Answer: 0
PLACEHOLDER ANSWER - the answer is two directions. Facing north, his left is west and right is east, so the field south of the wire is eastward, which means the current is upward. For an upward current the field lines circle anticlockwise seen from above, so the field is northward on the east side and westward on the north side. So (i) behind him, east of the conductor, the field points north, and (ii) behind him, north of the conductor, it points west.
