Question 26

A 1000 MW thermal power plant burns $$10^6\text{ kg}$$ of coal in one hour. How many kg of coal is burnt to produce the energy required to provide electrical energy to a $$2000\text{ W}$$ water heater for 2 hours a day in a month (Assume 30 days to a month).

Correct Answer: 120

Solution

In one hour the plant delivers $$1000\text{ MW} \times 1\text{ h} = 10^6\text{ kWh}$$ from $$10^6\text{ kg}$$ of coal, i.e. $$1\text{ kWh}$$ per kg. The heater uses $$2\text{ kW} \times 2\text{ h} \times 30 = 120\text{ kWh}$$ in a month. So $$120\text{ kg}$$ of coal is burnt.
