An electric train is moving at $$36\text{ kmph}$$. When its power is turned off, it stops in $$20\text{ s}$$. If the train were moving at $$54\text{ kmph}$$, find how far ahead (in m) of the station should the power be turned off, to halt the train at the station. Assume same uniform retardation in both the cases.
Correct Answer: 225
$$36\text{ kmph} = 10\text{ m/s}$$, so the retardation is $$\frac{10}{20} = 0.5\text{ m/s}^2$$. At $$54\text{ kmph} = 15\text{ m/s}$$, the stopping distance is $$\frac{v^2}{2a} = \frac{225}{1} = 225\text{ m}$$.
