Question 182

Five sentences are given below. Four of these when arranged in correct order, form a logical and meaningful paragraph. One of the sentences does not belong to this paragraph. Rearrange the 4 sentences that belong to the paragraph and choose the option that contains the order in which the 4 sentences should be put together:

A. Christopher did not care to learn that trade, but wanted to become a sailor.
B. Seeing the boy's strong liking for the sea, his father sent him to a school where he could learn geography, map-drawing, and whatever else might help him to become some day commander of a vessel.
C. Christopher Columbus, the discoverer of America, was born at Genoa, a seaport of Italy, more than four hundred and fifty years ago.
D. His father was a wool-comber.
E. Columbus jumped from his blazing ship into the sea, and catching hold of a floating oar, managed, with its help, to swim to the shore, about six miles away.

Solution

On carefully reading the sentences, we see that the subject of the paragraph is ‘Columbus’. Sentence C introduces the subject of the paragraph. Hence, it should be the opening sentence of the paragraph. Sentences D and A form a pair. They explain that Columbus did not learn his father’s trade. Sentence B should be the concluding line of the passage as it mentions what Columbus did instead. CDAB forms a meaningful paragraph. Sentence E does not fit anywhere in the passage. Therefore, option E is the right answer.
