Question 133

If the operation ‘o’ among real numbers is defined by x o y = $$x^2 - 2y$$, then values of x satisfying 2xo 4 =2 ox is

Solution

It is given that $$x o y = x^2 - 2y$$

$$\therefore$$ $$2x o 4 = 4x^2 - 8$$

and $$2 o x = 4 - 2x$$

=> $$4x^2 - 8 = 4 - 2x$$

=> $$2x^2 + x - 6 = 0$$

=> $$2x^2 + 4x - 3x - 6 = 0$$

=> $$2x (x + 2) - 3 (x + 2) = 0$$

=> $$(2x - 3) (x + 2) = 0$$

=> $$x = \frac{3}{2} , -2$$
