Question 133

DIRECTION for the question: Solve the following question and mark the best possible option.

A jogger running at 9 kmph alongside a railway track is 240 meters ahead of the engine of a 120 metre long train running at 45 kmph in the same direction. In how much time will the train pass the jogger?

In order to completely pass the jogger, the train rear's end should cross the jogger.
For this, the train will first cover the 240m distance that is between them and then 120m distance that is the lenght of the train.
So, the total distance to be covered is 240+120 = 360m.
The relative speed to cover this distance = 45 - 9 = 36 km/hr as the train and the jogger are moving in the same direction. This speed in m/sec =Β $$36\times\ \frac{5}{18}=10\ $$m/sec.
So, the time taken by the train to completely pass the jogger is 360/10 = 36 seconds.
