Find the positive number which when decreased by thirteen is equal to 48 times its reciprocal?

Solution

Let x be the positive number
Given, x - 13 = 48$$\times\frac{1}{x}$$
$$x^2 -13x -48 = 0$$
Thus, (x - 16)(x + 3) = 0
=> x = 16 and x = -3
Since, x is positive , x = 16
