What is the ratio of glucose to lactose in a mixture as sweet as maltose?

Solution

The sweetness of glucose = 0.74, the sweetness of lactose = 0.16 The sweetness of Maltose = 0.32

Using alligation, the ratio = $$\ \dfrac{\ 0.32-0.16}{0.74-0.32}$$ = $$\ \dfrac{\ 16}{42}$$ = 8:21
