The mean deviation of the data 2, 9,9, 3, 6, 9, 4 from the mean is:

Solution

1. Find the mean of all values

$$=\frac{2+9+9+3+6+9+4}{7}$$

$$mean=6$$

2. Find the distance of each value from that mean (subtract the mean from each value, ignore minus signs)

3. Then find the mean of those distances

$$mean deviation=\frac{4+3+3+3+0+3+2}{7}$$

$$mean deviation=\frac{18}{7}$$
