The missing value in the following figure is ________.
Correct Answer: 4
The diagram given in the question is a factor-tree. In such a tree, every number written at a branch-point is split into two “children” whose product equals the parent number.
In the present figure the topmost (parent) number is shown to split as$$48 = 6 \times 8$$
The left child $$6$$ has already been factorised further in the figure as$$6 = 2 \times 3$$so that branch is complete.
The right child $$8$$ is shown to split into $$2$$ and an unknown number, say $$x$$. According to the definition of a factor-tree, these two children must multiply to give their parent number $$8$$. Hence
$$2 \times x = 8$$
Solving for $$x$$ gives
$$x = \frac{8}{2} = 4$$
Therefore, the missing value in the figure is $$4$$.
