Question 72

A spherical glass vessel has a cylindrical neck 7 cm long and 4 cm in diameter. The diameter of the spherical part is 21 cm. Find the quantity of water it can hold.

Solution

Diameter of spherical part =21cm

D=2r;

Radius(r)$$=\frac{21}{2} =10.5cm$$

Diameter of cylindrical part =4cm

Radius(r)$$=\frac{4}{2} =2cm$$

Volume of the spherical part =$$ \frac{4}{3}πr^3$$

$$ \frac{4}{3}\times\frac{22}{7}\times(10.5)^3$$

= 4851 cm

Volume of cylinder part =$$πr^2h$$

$$\frac{22}{7}\times2\times2\times7$$

= $$88 cm^3$$

Quantity of the water that vessel can hold= 88+4851

=$$4939 cm^3$$
