Question 67

A pipe can fill a tank in 50 minutes. If the tank has a leakage which alone is capable of emptying the tank in 2$$\frac{1}{2}$$ hours, the tank will now be filled in ..........

Solution

Pipe can fill in 1 min = $$\frac{60}{50}=\frac{6}{5}$$

Pipe can empty in 1 min = $$\frac{2}{5}$$

Pipe and leakage 1 min work = $$\frac{6}{5}-\frac{2}{5}=\frac{4}{5}$$

So, tank will be filled in = $$\frac{5}{4}\times\ 60=75\ \min\ =\ 1\ hour\ 15\ \min s$$.
