Which among the following react with Hinsberg's reagent?
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Hinsberg’s reagent is $$C_6H_5SO_2Cl$$ (benzenesulphonyl chloride). It undergoes nucleophilic substitution with species that possess at least one N-H bond. Hence:
(i) Primary amines (one N-H bond) give $$C_6H_5SO_2\,NH\,R$$, whose remaining hydrogen is acidic, so the product dissolves in aqueous alkali.
(ii) Secondary amines (no acidic hydrogen after substitution but still have one N-H bond initially) give $$C_6H_5SO_2\,NRR'$$, an insoluble sulphonamide.
(iii) Ammonia itself behaves like a primary amine and forms $$C_6H_5SO_2NH_2$$.
(iv) Tertiary amines, nitro compounds, nitriles, etc. lack an N-H bond and therefore do not react.
Among the given compounds:
A - primary amine ⇒ reacts.
B - tertiary amine ⇒ does not react.
C - secondary amine ⇒ reacts.
D - nitro (or any compound without N-H) ⇒ does not react.
E - ammonia ⇒ reacts.
Thus the compounds that react with Hinsberg’s reagent are A, C and E.
