A man can row downstream a distance of 9 km in 2 hours and takes 6 hours while returning to the starting point. What is the speed (in km/h) of the stream?
Let speed of boat = $$x$$ km/hr and speed of stream = $$y$$ km/hr
Downstream speed = $$(x+y)$$ km/hr and upstream speed = $$(x-y)$$ km/hr
According to ques, => $$x+y=\frac{9}{2}=4.5$$ -------------(i)
and $$x-y=\frac{9}{6}=1.5$$ -------------(ii)
Subtracting equation (ii) from (i), we get :
=> $$2y=3$$
=> $$y=1.5$$
$$\therefore$$ Speed of stream =Â 1.5 km/hr
