Question 50

$$20\text{ g}$$ of ice is dropped in to a calorimeter of water equivalent $$10\text{ g}$$ containing $$90\text{ g}$$ of water at $$40^\circ\text{C}$$. The resultant temperature of the mixture is (specific heat of water $$= 1\text{ cal g}^{-1}\,^\circ\text{C}^{-1}$$, Latent heat of ice $$= 80\text{ cal g}^{-1}$$)

Solution

Taking the ice at $$0^\circ\text{C}$$, melting it needs $$20 \times 80 = 1600\text{ cal}$$, while the water and calorimeter can give up to $$100 \times 40 = 4000\text{ cal}$$, so all the ice melts. Then $$100 \times 1 \times (40 - T) = 1600 + 20 \times 1 \times T$$, so $$4000 - 100T = 1600 + 20T$$ and $$T = 20^\circ\text{C}$$.
