Question 48

Given below are two statements:
Statement I: Morphine is a narcotic analgesic. It helps in relieving pain without producing sleep.
Statement II: Morphine and its derivatives are obtained from opium poppy.
In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below

Statement I: "Morphine is a narcotic analgesic. It helps in relieving pain without producing sleep."

The first part is correct — morphine IS a narcotic analgesic. However, the second part is incorrect. Morphine, being a narcotic analgesic, relieves pain AND causes drowsiness/sleep. Non-narcotic analgesics (like aspirin) relieve pain without causing sleep, but morphine does induce sleep.

Statement I is false.

Statement II: "Morphine and its derivatives are obtained from opium poppy."

This is true. Morphine is the principal alkaloid obtained from the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum).

The correct answer is Statement I is false but Statement II is true.
