Benzyl isocyanide can be obtained by:
(A)
(B)
(C)
(D)
Choose the correct answer from the options given below:
Benzyl bromide reacts with silver cyanide ((AgCN)) to form benzyl isocyanide because (AgCN) is predominantly covalent and the nucleophilic attack occurs through the nitrogen atom.
The reaction is
$$C_6H_5CH_2Br+AgCN\rightarrow C_6H_5CH_2NC+AgBr.$$
Benzylamine reacts with chloroform and aqueous potassium hydroxide in the carbylamine reaction. Since benzylamine is a primary amine, it gives the corresponding isocyanide.
The reaction is
$$C_6H_5CH_2NH_2+CHCl_3+3KOH\rightarrow C_6H_5CH_2NC+3KCl+3H_2O.$$
(N)-Methylbenzylamine is a secondary amine and therefore does not undergo the carbylamine reaction, so it does not produce benzyl isocyanide.
Benzyl tosylate reacts with potassium cyanide ((KCN)) to give benzyl cyanide because (KCN) is ionic and the nucleophilic attack occurs through the carbon atom of the cyanide ion.
The reaction is
$$C_6H_5CH_2OTs+KCN\rightarrow C_6H_5CH_2CN+KOTs.$$
Hence, benzyl isocyanide is formed in
$$\boxed{\text{Option A and Option B}}.$$
