Dimethylglyoxime (DMG) in ammoniacal solution gives a brilliant red precipitate with Ni²⁺ ions. This is a characteristic test for nickel.
The red precipitate is nickel dimethylglyoximate, a chelate complex where Ni²⁺ is coordinated with two DMG molecules through the oxime nitrogen atoms.
