Question 40

Arrange the following in descending order of their values.

$$\frac{5}{6}, \frac{11}{18}, \frac{7}{9}, \frac{1}{3}$$

Solution

Convert all fractions to the common denominator 18. This gives $$\frac{5}{6} = \frac{15}{18}$$, $$\frac{11}{18}$$, $$\frac{7}{9} = \frac{14}{18}$$ and $$\frac{1}{3} = \frac{6}{18}$$. In descending order the numerators are 15, 14, 11, 6, so the order is $$\frac{5}{6}, \frac{7}{9}, \frac{11}{18}, \frac{1}{3}$$.
