Question 4

On a level ground there is a tree and a building. A girl standing in front of the tree started backing until she could see just the top edge of the building from above the tree top. She marked her place and measured it from the tree and it was $$5\text{ m}$$. If tree height is $$2.8\text{ m}$$, her eyes at a height of $$1.6\text{ m}$$ and distance between the tree and the building is $$30\text{ m}$$, height of the building in meters is

Solution

Her line of sight passes over the tree top and reaches the top of the building. Over the $$5\text{ m}$$ to the tree it rises $$2.8 - 1.6 = 1.2\text{ m}$$, so it rises $$\frac{1.2}{5} = 0.24\text{ m}$$ per metre. Over the $$35\text{ m}$$ to the building it rises $$0.24 \times 35 = 8.4\text{ m}$$, so the building is $$1.6 + 8.4 = 10\text{ m}$$ high.
