Question 37

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion A and the other is labelled as Reason R
Assertion A: Carbon forms two important oxides CO and CO$$_2$$. CO is neutral whereas CO$$_2$$ is acidic in nature.
Reason R: CO$$_2$$ can combine with water in a limited way to form carbonic acid, while CO is sparingly soluble in water.
In the light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :-

Carbon monoxide ((CO)) is a neutral oxide because it does not react with water or bases under ordinary conditions. Carbon dioxide ((CO_2)), on the other hand, is an acidic oxide as it reacts with water to form carbonic acid and reacts with bases to form carbonates.

The reaction of carbon dioxide with water is:

$$CO_2(g) + H_2O(l) \rightleftharpoons H_2CO_3(aq)$$

Carbon monoxide is only sparingly soluble in water and does not exhibit acidic behavior, whereas carbon dioxide combines with water (to a limited extent) to form carbonic acid. Thus, the ability of (CO_2) to form carbonic acid explains its acidic nature, while the absence of such behavior makes (CO) a neutral oxide.

Hence, both the Assertion and the Reason are correct, and the Reason correctly explains the Assertion.

Therefore, the correct answer is:

$$\boxed{\text{Option B: Both A and R are correct and R is the correct explanation of A.}}$$
