At a given time, the distance recorder of a car cruising at near constant speed on a road showed $$24942\ \text{km}$$. Two hours later the driver noticed that it showed a symmetric number again. What was the average speed of the car in this two-hour leg?
Correct Answer: 55
The reading 24942 reads the same both ways. The next such number has to begin with 25, so it is 25052. The car therefore covered $$25052 - 24942 = 110\ \text{km}$$ in 2 hours, an average speed of $$55\ \text{km/h}$$.
