Question 33

Given below are two statements:
Statement (I): A $$\pi$$ bonding MO has lower electron density above and below the inter-nuclear axis.
Statement (II): The $$\pi^*$$ antibonding MO has a node between the nuclei.
In light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:

image
  • Statement I is False: A $$\pi$$ bonding molecular orbital (MO) is formed by the constructive, sideways overlap of atomic orbitals. This results in higher (not lower) electron density concentrated in electron clouds located directly above and below the internuclear axis.
  • Statement II is True: A $$\pi^*$$ antibonding MO is formed by destructive overlap. This creates a nodal plane perpendicular to the internuclear axis right between the two nuclei, where the probability of finding an electron is exactly zero.
