A metal rod R tightly fits in to a ring as shown. Will there be any distortion in the ring on heating or cooling it? Discuss possible cases.

Correct Answer: 0
PLACEHOLDER ANSWER - the answer is a discussion. If the rod and ring are of the same material, both expand or contract in the same proportion and the ring keeps its circular shape. If the rod's expansion coefficient is larger, on heating it pushes the ring outward along its length and distorts it into an oval, while on cooling it shrinks more and becomes loose. If the rod's coefficient is smaller, on heating the ring expands away and the rod becomes loose, while on cooling the ring cannot shrink along the rod and is distorted.
