Question 31

Velocity time graph of a body is as shown. Find it's displacement (in m) in 10 s.

Correct Answer: 9

Solution

Displacement is the signed area under the graph. From 0 to 3 s the area is $$3 \times 4 = 12$$. From 3 s to 5 s the velocity falls from 4 to $$-2$$, crossing zero at $$\frac{13}{3}$$ s, giving $$\frac{1}{2} \times \frac{4}{3} \times 4 - \frac{1}{2} \times \frac{2}{3} \times 2 = 2$$. From 5 s to 10 s the area is $$-\frac{1}{2} \times 5 \times 2 = -5$$. The total displacement is $$12 + 2 - 5 = 9\text{ m}$$.
