Question 3

A, B and C can do a work in 10 days, 16 days and 20 days respectively. They started working together, but B left the work after 4 days. In how many days the work got completed?

Solution

Together they do $$\frac{1}{10} + \frac{1}{16} + \frac{1}{20} = \frac{8 + 5 + 4}{80} = \frac{17}{80}$$ of the work per day, so in 4 days they finish $$\frac{68}{80}$$. The remaining $$\frac{12}{80}$$ is done by A and C, who do $$\frac{1}{10} + \frac{1}{20} = \frac{12}{80}$$ per day, so it takes 1 more day. The work is completed in $$4 + 1 = 5$$ days.
