Ram treated a lustrous divalent element M with potassium hydroxide. He observed the formation of bubbles in the reaction mixture. He made the same observations when this element was treated with sulphuric acid. Then element M would be
Zinc is a lustrous divalent metal that is amphoteric. It liberates hydrogen with both alkali, $$\text{Zn} + 2\text{KOH} \rightarrow \text{K}_2\text{ZnO}_2 + \text{H}_2$$, and dilute acid, $$\text{Zn} + \text{H}_2\text{SO}_4 \rightarrow \text{ZnSO}_4 + \text{H}_2$$. Aluminium also does this but is trivalent, and copper does not react with dilute acid, so M is zinc.
