Question 155

The average age of a man and his son is 30 years. The ratio of their ages four years ago was 10 : 3 respectively. What is the difference between the present ages of the man and his son ?

Let the age of man be 'x' years.
and the age of son be 'y' years.
According to question,
$$\frac{x+y}{2}=30$$.
$$x+y=60$$. eq(1)
and $$\frac{x-4}{y-4}=\frac{10}{3}$$.
$$3x-12=10y-40$$.
$$10y-3x=28$$. eq(2)
Solving eq(1) and eq(2),
y=16,x=44.
Hence, difference between age of man and his son=44-16.
=28.
