Question 15

A solid compound 'X' on heating gives $$\text{CO}_2$$ gas and a residue. The residue when mixed with water forms compound 'Y'. On passing an excess of $$\text{CO}_2$$ through 'Y' in water, a clear solution of 'Z' is obtained. On boiling 'Z', the compound 'X' is reformed. The pH of aqueous solution of compound 'X' at $$25^\circ\text{C}$$ is

X is $$\text{CaCO}_3$$, which on heating gives CaO and $$\text{CO}_2$$. CaO with water gives $$\text{Ca(OH)}_2$$ (Y), excess $$\text{CO}_2$$ converts it into soluble $$\text{Ca(HCO}_3)_2$$ (Z), and boiling Z gives back $$\text{CaCO}_3$$. Calcium carbonate is a salt of a strong base and a weak acid, so the carbonate ion hydrolyses and its aqueous solution is basic, with pH more than 7.
