Question 143

Two circles are of radii 7 cm and 2 cm their centres being 13cm apart. Then the length of direct common tangent to the circles between the points of contact is

Let the length of direct common tangent be 'n' cm.
In $$\triangle$$ AOB,
AO=7-2=5 cm, AB=13 cm, BO=n
Using pythagoras's theorem in $$\triangle$$ AOB,
$$AO^{2}+BO^{2}=AB^{2}$$
$$5^{2}+n^{2}=13^{2}$$
$$n=12 cm$$
Hence Option A is correct.
