The average of five positive numbers is 213. The average of the first two numbers is 233.5 and the average of last two numbers is 271. What is the third number?

Solution

Let the numbers be $$A_1 , A_2 , A_3 , A_4 , A_5$$

=> $$A_1 + A_2 + A_3 + A_4 + A_5 = 213 * 5 = 1065$$

Also, $$A_1 + A_2 = 233.5 * 2 = 467$$

and $$A_4 + A_5 = 271 * 2 = 542$$

=> $$A_3 = 1065 - 467 - 542 = 56$$
