Question 130

The product of two successive numbers is 8556. What is the smaller number?

Solution

Let the two successive positive integers be $$(x)$$ & $$(x + 1)$$

Acc to ques,

=> $$(x) \times (x + 1) = 8556$$

=> $$x^2 + x - 8556 = 0$$

=> $$x = \frac{-1 \pm \sqrt{(1^2) - (4 \times 1 \times -8556)}}{2}$$

=> $$x = \frac{-1 \pm \sqrt{34225}}{2}$$

=> $$x = \frac{-1 \pm 185}{2}$$

=> $$x = 92 , -93$$

Since the numbers are positive, => $$x = 92$$

$$\therefore$$ Smaller number = 92
